How to OverCome Self-Doubt: A New Perspective to 6 Tips

It's a new week with a whole new set of probabilities & awesome paths your life can take.

Today I'm talking about something personal and an old enemy of mine. Self-Doubt.
If I'm being honest though, it has been both my ruination & salvation at times. You can bet it's made me into the Writer I am today.

Self-Doubt to me is a mighty temptress, able to find you at your most vulnerable, often catching you unawares. She is quite possibly the Greatest enemy ever known to Creativity. Yet one cannot exist without the other. 
She's able to take your innermost fears & twist them inextricably until all you believe is that you deserve the life you're currently living and that this is as far as you'll ever go. 

"We accept the love we think we deserve."
My favorite quote from the movie: The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
It has such deep meaning for us all. 
We really do accept what we think we deserve. 






Last week I fell pray to this mistress of deception. She tackled me when all seemed to go wrong in my life. And true to her seductive nature she lulled me into a sense of numbness whereby I was given tiny whispers that it's ok to be lazy, it's ok to take a break...and even to give up.

We've all had these moments haven't we? The ones where even when things are going great, even when we're offered Big opportunities, there's that one moment where Doubt creeps in. Slowly at first and not until it has its sharp claws deep within you do you feel that colossal wave sweep through you, that horrible pit in your stomach and that voice in your head saying "I'm not good enough." or my personal favorite, "There's no way I can do that."

It's like a never ending curse that we must all bare our souls to and somehow survive each time it happens.

Did you know JK Rowling, one of the most successful authors in history went through horrible depression and self doubt? Oh yes. Boy did she ever.
She was a single mom with little to no means of supporting her family and a very Real chance that they would be taken away from her. I can't even fathom what it would be like to be her at that very moment.
In fact, if you're a fan of the Harry Potter series, you'll notice that the Dementors were inspired by the turmoil she experienced whilst depressed. Ghoulish creatures that are able to suck every ounce of happiness you posses.

So let's get cracking on that Cure then shall we before those nasty Dementors return
I'm going to go through the number One google result for Overcoming Self Doubt and see what spin I can give.

6. Ask Yourself Empowering Questions.

Hmm this could be a new take on affirmations, instead of just saying the words you're now asking the questions of yourself and confirming the answers.
Allowing you to admit to yourself your strengths and weaknesses, fears and beliefs.
.
* Do you want to be responsible for your own life decisions?
* Do you have the courage to go after what you want and see it through?
* Can you accept that fear is part of the journey and move forward anyway?
* Can you recognize that fear is only your leader if you allow it to be?


The mind is a fickle thing, it can change so suddenly or just be a stubborn nail that you can never budge. So it's important to reassure the mind every day of it's true purpose. To remain strong for the dreams and passions you wish to pursue.

5. Decide You Don’t Have To Do Anything. 

"I wish to control the universe and make it so nothing bad happens ever again!"
Whether naive or mature, I believe at some level we all want absolute control.
This one seems to involve an excercise to show You that You have the power of Choice. That you can either choose to do something or not to do it. The choice and therefore responsibility is all on you thereafter.
This is hogwash ofcourse, this is the very problem that breeds self doubt, it's not that we don't feel in control or that we don't feel like our decisions matter. It's Because we feel the control and the responsibility that Doubt haunts us endlessly. It's because we feel like even if we make the decision, even if we take on the responsibility and put on that brave face, how are we suppose to Face it when it all falls apart or that our choices inevitably led us to that dark and dingy road of failure?

With this point I would say, screw control. You have enough on your plate with work, the family, the kids, the house, the food, the money, the retirement plan, the travel. And then on top of all of that you add the workload of pursuing your dreams...

Just Decide that no ONE decision is going to make or break you, decide that you'll have to take on this feeling of Self-Doubt each and every time, battle it just like the warriors in those Mythical stories. It's not about winning or losing, it's about surviving each time.

4. Build Your Confidence Muscle. 
Here they talk about how every obstacle, every failure, every setback builds your confidence muscle.
Confidence isn't created or bought or even bedazzled...it's Earned. I'm talking about true confidence. not the kind you get when you go home with a hot guy or girl at the end of a date or the kind you get when you can afford an amazing car.

True confidence can only be attained by force of will. By weathering the storms, by fighting through the obstacles, by smiling through the pain and by surviving. Because once you go through the trails and tribulations, I promise you'll love yourself more for making it on your own terms.

3. Change your attitude about failure.
In the highly popular Divergent movie series, the main character Tris often has this remarked about her:
"Fear doesn't shut you down, it wakes you up."

Thankfully these aren't just statements and the character proves this quality by action many times over in the books & movies.
There are honestly so many types of fears out there, it's mindboggling. So how are we suppose to conquer something that exists practically in every direction around the world? WE DON'T
The psychobible says that there are many ways to overcome fear but why should we overcome it? Why, when we can change it, mold it to our liking. Just look at that fear from a different perspective.

My favorite quote illustrates this perfectly:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

Such awesome meaning here! I love it.
Here we see that most people will have a fear that they are not good enough when in fact if you look at it from a different angle, it appears that we a more afraid of succeeding than failure.
Last week when the doubt set in, I wasn't depressed because I had failed I was depressed because I wondered more than anything what I would do should I become successful.
Would I be worthy enough to deserve that success, would I be humble enough that I honor that success. Would I be mature enough to own that success...

2. Talk to someone. 

Surround yourself with only those that are going to take you higher.
This could be the most difficult step for anyone. Because we so desperately want to believe in our friends to have faith that they will be there when we need them the most.
It's easy to make friends but it's not so easy to find the ones that are truly selfless in their actions towards you. Find that friend that's there in a heart beat, to Listen only, to allow you that opportunity to vent, to say everything on your mind no matter how ridiculous, dark or funny it may sound. They listen and comfort. They when all is said and done, they Support. They are that pillar that keeps you from diving into the abyss of doubt.

1. Make a Decision.
For pursuing your Dream. YOU ARE AWESOME.
Never, ever ever never ever never Never forget that. 
It's the start of a new week, it's a beginning of sorts. The perfect place to make that decision to TRY. For every great success on this planet began with that very same decision to TRY.

It's so so EASY for us to fall into rooted routines and accustomed paths that it's almost impossible to break free, to ignore that part of your brain that compels you to procrastinate or value other things in your life as of more import.
No one, no one can make this decision for you. You could read a hundred blog posts and a thousand self help books on overcoming doubt but you'll move no further than where you are now if you don't make a DECISION to TRY.

I say this in the hopes that now only you hear it but that I do too. For no one is perfect & even the most motivated people on the planet have darkened days of self doubt and reprimand. What matters most is that we ALL just keep moving forward, keep battling those demons, keep surviving and just plain ol' keep on keepin' on!

I really do Believe in all of you and the immense power you carry within your beating heart and fiery soul. We are all capable and the greatest disappointment would be to not honor the potential we have.

So I beseech you, start to Dream again, start to Believe in You because I already do. I have faith that all of you can & will accomplish incredible and insurmountable feats. Your dream is still there, I promise you it's still there. Reach out and Soar with it.
ROAR like the Lion you were always meant to be!

Malala Yousafzai - 5 Lessons You Taught Me

Half way through the week & it's #WednesdayWisdom

Happy International Women's Day!

On this day of days, I get to feature an unbelievably powerful soul amidst the chaos that is the World. One of the most influential and bravest women this world has ever known.

Malala Yousafzai S.St (Malālah Yūsafzay: Urdu: ملالہ یوسفزئی‎; Pashto: ملاله یوسفزۍ‎ [məˈlaːlə jusəf ˈzəj]; born 12 July 1997) is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate.

Ever since I heard of Malala, I have been a massive fan & supporter of what she stands for. She's inspired so many all around the world & not just girls but more importantly; I have mad respect for the fact that she is advocating for reading & books. I remember the interview on Oprah where she said she was on the bus & when the terrorist asked for Malala, she got up without hesitation. Such bravery, such fortitude, such impossible courage. Through it all she survived & like a Phoenix, rose from the ashes, more powerful & iridescent than ever before.

5. Gender Equality

“Extremists have shown what frightens them most: A girl with a Book.”
There are so many places in this world where women are not treated equally. Sometimes it's the actual law and worse still, sometimes it's the unwritten rules. This frustrates me to no end. One of my favorite presidents of all time, Nelson Mandela believed in a "Rainbow Nation", where all are equal.
As a man you should vow to never oppress not only woman, but anyone you come accross.
As a woman you should vow to never Be oppressed, no matter the circumstance.

4. F.E.A.R – False Evidence Appearing Real

“I am Stronger than Fear.”
"I said to myself, Malala, you must be Brave. You must not be afraid of anyone.You are only trying to get an education. You are not committing a Crime."

Let weakness, fear & hopelessness die. From the ashes let strength, power & courage be born.








3. ParentHood

“People ask me, what special is in my mentorship which has made Malala so bold and so courageous and so vocal and poised? I tell them, don't ask me what I did. Ask me what I did not do. I did not clip her wings, and that's all.” ~ ‎Ziauddin Yousafzai, Father of Malala

Probably the most important lesson for everyone on this planet. It has never been your duty on this earth to clip anyone's wings.

No matter the dream, no matter the goal, no matter the crazy sounding idea.

When a friend, family member, or even a stranger comes to you with their ambition - Ask yourself, is it absolutely, positively Your Duty to dissuade,discourage or otherwise push them from it?

For all parents, I implore you from the bottom of my soul with true evidence of the power of a child. Be there, to support, encourage & most of all, never doubt. For children are the true innovators & world changers. Just imagine what this world would be had Malala's father been part of those who treat women as unequal? Would those empowered girls, encouraged to read books around the world now, even exist?

Let us wage a glorious struggle against illiteracy, poverty & terrorism. Let us pick up our books, and our pens, they are our Most powerful weapons.

Steve Jobs - 5 Lessons You Taught Me

Half way through the week & it's #WednesdayWisdom

On this day I get to feature one of the most influential and unbelievably innovative men this world has ever known.

Steven Paul "SteveJobs (/ˈdʒɒbz/; February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American information technology entrepreneur and inventor. Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution.

There was such undeniable power in his work ethic, belief, passion & posture that it's almost unbearable to imagine a world without him. Steve not only innovated but inspired change throughout the world. He opened it's eyes to true competition by only trying to be better than he was yesterday.
The lessons I share today, I believe, can be applied to each and every person on this planet. It's only a small testimony to his EPIC legacy.

5. Faith & Belief
"Sometimes life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith."

Don't I know it, these past few weeks have been one helluva roller coaster & a half. But when you have a vision, a belief system & EPIC friends who support you wholeheartedly...You never lose Faith.

"I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance."

4. Work Ethic
"The only way to do great work is to love what you do."

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.

We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.

Ellen Degeneres - 5 Lessons You Taught Me

Half way through the week & it's #WednesdayWisdom

This post has been a long long time coming, in fact when I started blogging in April 2016, I promised that I would do a post on Ellen Degeneres. Now 50,000 page-views in a month later, on the way to 100,000. It feels like the right time to do this.

Her show has been an unbelievably massive beacon of hope in my life, shining light into the darkest corners of my psyche and bringing out such laughter, I’ve never known. I truly believe that Laughter & Fun are absolutely necessary for the formula to happiness, Ellen excels in not only living both of those values but in bringing it out in other people from all over the world.

"Just keep swimming": An emotional Ellen DeGeneres held back tears as she stood next to President Obama and received the highest civilian honor given by The White House, the Medal of Freedom


Watching her show has brought untold joy into my life, not only for the exciting guests she has had but also for the reprieve she facilitates. Wherein, all my worries, all my problems seem to dissolve in her presence. Am I alone in this feeling?
So on this day of days, I share with you 5 Lessons Ellen has taught me.

5. "If someone says you’re weird, say “Thank You”"


True Story whenever people have told me this, I’ve replied, "thanks for the compliment." 
I enjoy being different, I revel in it and so should you. Why would you want to be anything but unique and awesome?

4. “Find out who you are and be that person. That’s what your soul was put on this Earth to be. Find that truth, live that truth and everything else will come.”


The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and they day you find out why you were born. Find what sets your soul ablaze with passion, what motivates you to go above and beyond to achieve your dream life. If you ask Ellen’s family they would’ve said her brother Vance was the funny one. You’re meant for more than the 1’s and 0’s in your bank account. 

3. "I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated & helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values. That’s what I stand for."

What are your values? What do you stand for? 

To me these are the best values to have, period.

I stand for a life uninhibited, a life of freedom, a life that I choose and no one else. 

2. "Just Keep Swimming."

Such a simple phrase yet so profoundly effective in its motivation. Ellen has worked as a waitress, painter & even a bartender. My point is, like every single successful person she started out as a normal working class citizen. With dreams so BIG that, no one could’ve denied her even if they wanted to… try as they might. Life is all about choices and your choice to stick with it, to push through, to struggle, will be the very penultimate contributing factor to your Success. Whenever you feel down or lacking, sing that song in your head. Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming.

1. "Be Kind to One Another."

As evident by being number One on this list, this is my favorite lesson and favorite quote by her. It’s also the phrase I use to end every single one of my blog posts. This ties in to lesson number 3 and could be the condensed version of it, in fact. Another simple phrase but when repeated and practiced, has become a powerful force of good in this world.

Testimonials for Live Your Now & S.S Blake


Last year was probably filled with the single most amazing, craziest, uninhibited, outstanding, trying & unbelievable times I've ever experienced in my life. But along that journey, I was introduced to a whole new side to the world. The wonderful world of personal development. See before that I believe I just existed. Existed in the way my circumstances & environment had molded me to become. I had no inclination of the power that comes from mastering yourself nor of the way in which it strengthened the bonds you had with family and friends or how good it made you feel. 

It was through this that I learned about a key concept called Edification.
Now the dictionary defines the word Testimonial as: n. a formal statement testifying to someone's character and qualifications.
And I would like to use this opportunity to give testimony to two unique and powerful souls that I've had the distinct pleasure of working with, 
Savannah S. Blake & Richie from the Live Your Now initiative. They have both participated in the Inspire Tag posts that I run here on the blog, in which they share epic answers that are sure to inspire you. Read all about them by clicking on the links below:

Let's begin in order, shall we?
Meet Richie

Live Your Now, run by Richie, an almost reluctant "coach" who embarked upon the journey to bring mindfulness to others, because basically it needed doing. Facing his own "am I good enough to do this?" fears, he now encourages others to live mindfully and presently, after spending the majority of his own life hiding the grip of anxiety and locked in his own thoughts, now with the attitude of "Heck, if I can do this, anyone can!" A universal calling, rather than something he would have predicted, he's now submitted entirely to this path in service to bringing peace to people and our world... hopefully... or giving it a good go anyway!

This weekend I got to attend the National Achievers Congress, VIP style thanks to In Africa N Beyond who will be featured in this weeks #TravelTuesday Travel Tag so look out for that. 
While at the congress I learned that "Thoughts are real forces" from the one & only Robin Banks who I got to take a selfie with the last time I met him haha. He talked about how it all starts with a thought, how there's three states of the mind. Conscious, Unconcious & Subconscious. How what we think, we become. Anxiety, doubt, depression & stress plague us all and if we focus on only those thoughts, guess what happens? They become Real! How about if we focus on the positive ones?

That being said, Richie & I had been talking for awhile on social media so recently when I had a bout of anxiety over an unbelievable opportunity I had been offered, he was the first one I went to for guidance. The opportunity itself was something I never planned for or even imagined would ever come my way so naturally I had doubts & reservations. 

The first thing I was taken by was Richie's abundant joy & celebration over my news.It's always heart warming to find people in your life that are selflessly supportive & encouraging. He then proceded to listen to my doubts and proposed not only the solutions to them but also, more importantly, he helped me figure out my next steps to take. It's easy to get caught up in the chaos storm of thoughts and find them difficult to decipher, yet Richie helped me field through them with ease, finding those golden nuggets that I could use to help me go forward with this opportunity I had been given. 

Thankfully he was able to schedule a skype call with me that Sunday afternoon. In it we discussed how I would move forward and I also got to hear his truly deep and moving story of why he started the Live Your Now initiative. Why he's so passionate about it. It touched me to my core and I will never forget the message he relayed within it. I hope that you all hear it from him soon. 

What I really want to talk about is the end of this call, because it was probably one of the most profound moments I've had in a long time. Richie advised me that we would be ending the call with a mindful exercise and I had no idea what to expect. His goal for me since I began talking to him about my anxiety was to get me in the present moment and not focus on the past or the future. He told me to close my eyes and focus on my breathing. I did. He then began to slip into an almost hypnotic and soothing voice walking me through these steps of presence. For the First Time in MY life, I truly existed only in that present moment. It was mind boggling what he made me feel, I can't even begin to describe the experience of existing within that one moment, of everything else fading away not like it was in the background, no, it all faded away and I was left with this peace. This peaceful moment of clarity. For the longest time I thought it impossible to find such a moment, to ever have a way to clear your mind, yet there it was thanks to my friend, my mentor, my brother Richie. I have used this mindful technique every day, all week and it has just been spectacular. I've become more and more appreciative of the power of the mind, less anxious over well practically everything, more self-confident in my abilities. I can truly say without a shadow of a doubt that Life has never been the same since. What an amazing, powerful & sincerely helpful godsend Richie has been and I know will continue to be for me & many, many others all around the world. 

I would passionately recommend anyone & everyone to Richie at the Live Your Now initiative.

My biggest issue & enemy right now is Time. Time to deal with my day job & also pursue my dream of becoming a published author. More often than not I leave the office quite late, mostly dragging through the day while becoming more alive and happy at night where I'm able to pursue my dream passionately. But alas they day job provides security & pays the bills so woe is me right? Haha wrong and I'll tell you why. Because thanks to my buddy Richie, I met the incredible Light that is Savannah S. Blake. 

This was the concern I presented to Savannah on the Skype call she honored me with. 

The first thing that I was taken by was her beautiful and bubbly personality, she greeted me with such warm acceptance and understanding. What really resonated with me was her ability to relate to my circumstance in every way and make me feel at ease to discuss my problems. More importantly, she created a safe and private place for me to express my emotions. 
What a great listener! In her replies, I could tell she had a brilliant fountain of knowledge and was able to tap into that but also relay the information in an understandable way. 

We got to talking and Savannah was able to instantly come up with a brilliant plan for me to do what I love as a day job and still pursue my dream. By that I mean she had already analyzed my strengths, providing me with a goal to achieve that takes advantage of those strengths. I was amazed because it was a strength I hadn't ever paid attention to. 
~ Sometimes it takes the keen eye of another to spot them and help you nurture them to it's fullest potential. ~ 
This is what Savannah has helped and continues to help me achieve. So excited for the future and to be working with her.

I distinctly remember the day I got the notification that Kay_Angel had followed me. Upon opening up her profile I was blown away at the sight of her having +500K Followers! I felt so honored & humbled, mostly jazzed that I immediately followed back with furious retweets on her tweets haha. She really does send out beautiful, powerful & trend setting tweets. Motivational, Inspiring & wise. Over & above this, days after my retweet parade, I received a message from her saying that due to my retweet of her specific Hashtagged tweet I had been chosen to receive exclusive VIP tickets to the Comedy Roast Battle at MonteCasino - pics on Instagram.

1. What is the best advice you were ever given?
  • Honestly, I cannot pick one. The best advice to me, is given at a time I need to apply it most in my life. 
2. Who inspires you and why?
  • I learn something from everyone I meet, everyone has a story. And from that, I get inspired.
3. Everyone has bad days, how do you deal with a bad day?
  • Music & that special someone :) 
4. Where do you go/what do you do when you need motivation?
  • I go on social media, weird, but if you know where to look, if you follow the right people, social media becomes about motivation and positive vibes oh and books too! 
5. Failure is a big part of life, what has been your biggest failure to date?
  • I guess when life happened and interrupted the plans I had. But a friend once told me "the best-laid plans are bound to be disrupted by events we never plan for, nor anticipated nor prepared for. it is how we move on that matters. sometimes the cruelty or pain of the disruption throws us offside, and you self-doubt whether there is something wrong. but you gotta push." One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received. 
6. What is your biggest achievement?
  • So far, academically. Something I take pride in. 
7. Have you conquered any fears?
  • I've temporarily overcome my fears. Conquered, no...I've realized that they will be a part of me. I'll always be terrified out of heights but I'll suck it up and go on a roller coaster whenever I'm at Gold Reef City or Ratanga Junction. Also, the fear of failure is what drives me to work hard so that I won't get to the point of "failure".
8. Music helps lift our mood, What is your go-to song when you need a pick me up?
  • It depends on what got me down in the first place. Sometimes I just open Apple Music and just play suggested music and sometimes classical music, it calms the mind and soothes the soul. So I don't really have a specific song.

  • Your choice.
10. What do you do to clear your mind?
  • Is there such a thing? *laughs* 
11. Life can be stressful, what are your top 3 things to unwind?
  • Travel. Food. Time spent with ones you Love. 
12. Have you watched any inspiring movies? Do you have any favorites?
  • Not that I recall. I don't think inspiring movies would be interesting to me.
13. What is your favorite inspirational quote?
  • Let today be the day you love yourself enough to no longer just dream of a better life; let it be the day you act upon it ~Steve Maraboli
14. Do you listen to motivational speakers?
  • No.
15. How do you cope with unpleasant people?
  • Ignore. 
16. What is your best piece of advice?
  • Hmmm...I'd say, Everyday, do something that will bring you a step closer to the life of your dreams. The future YOU will thank you for that.
17. Complete the sentence “When life gives you lemons…”
  • ...Give them to Beyoncé. 
18. What is the most inspiring book you have ever read?
  • 'The Alchemist', it's the best! A beautiful story and inspiration in one book, I mean, what more can you ask for?! 
19. Do you have a place to pray or meditate?
  • No, no specific place, but it happens mostly in the bedroom. 
20. What is your motto in life?
  • Do what makes YOU happy!
